“Sample Contract”


This agreement is between Name (“Editor”) and Name (“Author”) and concerns the following manuscript:

The Editor agrees to do the following on the manuscript:

a) Copy editing for grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation

b) Line editing (Stylistic) for clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon, polishing language; line-by-line editing for smoothness and clarity while maintaining author’s voice and style.

Both editing processes require that manuscripts meet the Editor’s acceptability standards. If the manuscript is not fit for editing, then it will be returned to the Author. The Editor reserves the right to refuse to edit any manuscript for any reason. Once a manuscript has been deemed unacceptable for editing, the author shall not resubmit the work to editors at English Hub, even if the manuscript has been revised.

Other editorial specifics will be made clear and explicit in actual contract.

Contingent upon immediate signing of this contract and payment, the edit/critique of the manuscript is to be delivered to the Author by the Editor on or before <insert date here>.

2. Delivery

Manuscripts/said works and all affiliated written materials shall be delivered electronically by the Author and received electronically by the Editor. At no time will edited manuscript be mailed to Authors through USPS or UPS or any other traditional transient system. It is the responsibility of both parties to ensure electronic submissions and receipt of manuscripts.


Author agrees to pay Editor half of total cost to begin editing manuscript and the remaining balance once the editing process is complete. Editor will not release work until payment is received in full. If full payment is not received, then said work will be retained the Editor. Payment can be made via debit, credit card or money order. Personal checks are not accepted. If the remaining balance is not received within 30 days from the date the manuscript is completed, then the Editor reserves the right to pursue the appropriate course of action for collecting payment.


Editor agrees not to reproduce, give, or show to anyone any material sent to him/her by the Author, which is outlined in the Non-Disclosure Agreement. Editor shall refuse any requests, even from the Author, to disseminate said work to third parties. The responsibility to share work with any entity other than English Hub Editors is solely the Author’s.


No guarantees are made as to the salability or marketability of the edited manuscript. Nor is there a guarantee that the manuscript will be completely error-free, though all efforts will be made to make it so. Editor claims no rights to said work nor will he/she pursue under any circumstances any royalties and/or monies gained by the sale of the said work. Should the Author be displeased with the Editor’s work, he/she shall not receive a refund for services rendered nor shall the Editor amend, revise or modify final decisions made about a manuscript.


Both parties agree that this Agreement shall be interpreted and governed by the laws of the State of Louisiana.


This Agreement may not be amended. This Agreement must be signed by both parties to be valid.

Authors shall receive a style sheet with edited work. At the Author’s discretion, he/she may request a discussion via phone about decisions the Editor made in and about the manuscript. The phone call discussion shall not exceed 60 minutes.

Should the Author require both line and copy editing for a manuscript, then he/she agrees to enter into two separate contracts and pay two separates fees.  Two separate delivery dates of work will be given to the Author should he/she enlist both line and copy editing services from Editor.   At no time will Author and Editor enter into concurrent editing agreements. Author agrees not to compromise the editorial process at the expense of the Editor’s time by ensuring that his/her work has undergone self-editing prior to line-editing and line-editing prior to copy editing. Editor bears no responsibility for manuscripts that have skipped stages of the editorial process.


Once the project is in process either party may terminate this Agreement. If the Editor terminates the agreement, Author will pay the Editor for work completed up to the date of termination.  If the Author terminates the agreement, the Author will pay the Editor for the work completed up to the date of termination, but this amount will not be less than 50% of the estimated total for the project. Author shall notify Editor within five (5) days if he/she will terminate contract. Editor shall notify Author within five (5) days if he/she will terminate contract. Editor shall refund any excess payments to Author, if due, within ten working days.
